Each allows you to create a Google ad targeted to your specific audience—but the way Google shows those ads and drives clicks is completely different.

With the Google Search Network, you create a text-based ad that will show up on the SERPs when users search for a specific keyword. So, for example, let’s say you own a graphic design business in Melbourne and you want to create an ad on Google to engage new customers. You would create a text ad for your business and then bid on graphic design-related keywords (like “graphic designer in Melbourne” or “Melbourne logo design”). Then, when people searched those keywords, they’d see your ad—and, if they clicked on it, you’d pay Google for the lead.

The Google Display Network is a completely different ballgame. While Google Search Network shows text-based ads directly to users in the Google platform, the Google Display Network allows you to place banner ads (also known as display ads) on websites you think your ideal customer would visit (so, for example, if you own a construction company that specializes in building new homes in Sydney, you might place banner ads on local real estate websites).

Google Search Network and Google Display Network are both effective—but in different ways and for different reasons. Alright, so now that we covered the basics of what Google Adwords is, let’s talk about how, exactly, to get started with the platform—and set up a Google adwords campaign.

First things first—before you can get started with Google Ads, you need a Google account. If you don’t already have a Google account or Gmail address, you’ll need to create one before you move forward with creating a campaign in Google AdWords.

Once your account is all set up, go to ads.google.com. Think of this Adwords landing page as Ground Zero for your AdWords management and paid advertising on Google; this is where you can focus on creating Google ads, adwords optimization, and analyzing adwords competition using Google Adwords.

Once you’re on the Adwords manager homepage, click “Campaigns” in the left sidebar. In the center of the page, click “New Campaign.” From there, you can choose what kind of campaign you want to move forward with (including search, display, shopping, and video) and whether the end goal for your campaign is sales, leads, or website traffic. Then, you can select how you plan to achieve those goals (so, for example, is success driving traffic to a landing page or booking phone calls?).

From there, you can choose whether you want to focus on Google Search or Google Display Network, the geographic location where you want to focus your Google ads (so, for example, in a specific city, state, or zip code), your ad language, your bidding strategy (so, for example, do you want your ads to be spread equally throughout the day or focused during a specific time period?), your budget, and the start and end dates of your campaign.

Once the basic structure of your campaign is in place, it’s time to move onto the important part—choosing your keywords. Choosing the right campaign adwords is an absolute must if you want your campaign to succeed; good adwords keywords are what drive results—while the wrong adwords keywords can drain your budget so fast, it’ll make your head spin.

Ok, so we covered the basics of Adwords advertising on Google. But, now, the bigger question—why should you use Google AdWords?

AdWords is faster than traditional SEO. Traditional search engine optimisation requires a significantly higher time investment than SEO Adwords (or, in other words, ads on the Google Search Network). If you need results—and you need them fast—taking the PPC route will get you there much faster.

Google Adwords Marketing puts you in front of the right people at the right time. Part of being successful with any marketing campaign is connecting with the right audience at the right time—and Google Adwords is one of the most efficient ways to do that. With ads on the Google Search Network, you can serve targeted ad messaging to people who are actively searching for your products or services—and with the Google Display Network, you can continue retargeting people if they visit your website but don’t make a purchase. These two platforms offer opportunities to connect with your ideal customer at the right time in the buying cycle—which can seriously increase your conversions.

  • Start small. If you’re new to Google Website Adwords, you don’t want to set a $10,000 budget straight out of the gate. Start small by testing out a few ads at a low budget. Optimize them until they’re performing well and then roll out a bigger budget. By keeping your costs low until you figure out how to optimize your ads, you can stretch your budget and spend your money when you know your ads will drive results.
  • Find the keyword “sweet spot.” When choosing the keywords for your Google ads, you don’t want to go with something that’s affordable but doesn’t have any search volume. On the flip side, you don’t want to go with a keyword that a ton of people are searching for—but is going to cost you an insane amount of cash for every click. When it comes to keywords, the key to success is finding the “sweet spot”—keywords that have enough search volume to drive real results for your business, but not so much competition that the CPC completely drains your budget.
  • Split test your ads. If you want your ads to perform at the highest level, you need to test them—and split testing (also known as A/B testing) is a great way to do it.
