What is the best strategy for marketing on Facebook?

When it comes to Facebook for business, there are a number of different marketing Facebook strategies out there. You can build a Facebook business page and try to reach your followers organically. You can pop on Facebook Live and try to build an audience through engaging video content. You can make yourself a presence in key Facebook groups in your industry.

And all of those strategies are fine—but they’re time-consuming, and in terms of Facebook marketing, they’re not going to give you the most bang for your buck.

If you really want to leverage the power of Facebook and get the kind of results you need to catapult your business to the next level, there’s one strategy that you absolutely need to wrap your head around an implement for your brand—and that’s advertising on Facebook.

Facebook adds (whether they’re sponsored ads Facebook, Facebook video ads, text-based Facebook ads, or the like) are the absolute best way to narrow down your audience and deliver the hyper-targeted advertising experience necessary to convert your followers into real, paying customers.

But how does it work? What’s the best way to advertise on Facebook? What are the do’s and don’ts of an effective Face book campaign? And how can you use Face book advertising to drive real results for your business?

Facebook advertising 101

So, first things first—let’s take a look at the basics of advertising on Facebook.

Setting up a business page on Facebook

Before you move forward with advertising on Facebook—and create your first Facebook ad—you’ll want to set up a business page on Facebook. Facebook business page setup lets Facebook know that you’re more than just an individual user looking to connect with old friends from high school—you’re a

Facebook business looking to advertise, run your first Facebook campaign, and drive engagement, opt-ins, and sales through the platform.

Facebook business page setup is simple. Go to Facebook.com/business; in the top right hand corner, you’ll see a drop down menu. Select “Create a Page.” Once there, you can choose the option that best suits your business (either “Business or Brand” or “Community or Public Figure”) and then add your page name and business category. So, if we were making a Facebook business page, the page name would be “King Kong” and the business category would be “marketing services.”

Once you’ve added in your page name and business category, congratulations! You’ve got a business page on Facebook. Once your page is set up, you can customize it with photos, contact information, and anything else you want to add in about your company.

Getting started with your first Facebook ad

Now that you have a piece of Facebook real estate, you can start to advertising on Face book. Go back to the Facebook.com/business URL and click “Create an Ad” in the top right corner. This will take you to the Facebook ads manager—which is where the real magic happens.
The Facebook ads manager is not only the place where you create your Facebook ad campaign—it’s also the place where you can hone in on your ideal audience.

Ads on Facebook have some of the most powerful targeting capabilities in the advertising and marketing industry. Face book marketing allows you to create custom audiences—and then create extremely relevant ads for those audiences.

Your business Facebook account allows you to narrow down your audience based on location, age, gender, interests—you can even create audiences of people who like or follow your competitors. This ability to niche down your audience is incredibly powerful; by creating custom audiences for each sector of your ideal demographic, you can create incredibly targeted ads and messaging—and the more targeted your ads and messaging, the higher your conversion rate.

If you want your Facebook ads to be successful, narrow down your audience as much as possible. So, for example, let’s say you have an accounting practice that specializes in working with small business owners, and you want to drive new clients into your business. Instead of serving a local ad to everyone in your area, you might narrow it down to business owners between the ages of 25 and 50 who live within three miles of your practice. This will ensure that the people that see your ad are people who are actually qualified to become customers.

Or let’s say you just opened up a new bakery—but you’re struggling to compete against the larger, more established bakery in town. Create a custom audience of your competitor’s Facebook followers—and then create an ad that offers them a free baked good their first time in the shop.
The point is, the more you niche down your audience—and the more targeted you create ads for those audiences—the better your results will be.

The different types of Facebook ads

The audience you show your Facebook ad to is extremely important—but so is the type of ad you show that audience.

There are multiple different types of Face book ads and Facebook ad formats—and it’s important to understand each of them so you know which is going to be the best fit for you, your business, and your audience.

Some of the most popular (and efficient) types of advertising on Face book include:

  • Link ClickAds. Link ClickAds, which send your followers to an external website (like a landing page with an email opt-in or a blog post) are arguably the most common ads on Facebook. LinkClick Ads include an image, a headline, text for the ad copy, and a link description (which gives a short summary of what people will find on the external website).
  • Video Ads. Video ads are another form of LinkClick Ads. The only difference? Instead of an image, these ads feature a video (which is typically around 30 seconds long).
  • Boosted Posts. If you post something on your Facebook Business page that you want to promote, you can “boost” the post with a Facebook ad to increase visibility and drive more engagement.
  • Carousel ads. Advertising an ecommerce store? A Carousel ad (which allows you to feature up to 10 products, videos, or links in a single ad) is a great way to drive traffic and sales.
  • Product ads. Retargeting is an extremely efficient marketing strategy—and product ads are the way to retarget your website visitors on Facebook.
  • Lead ads. If your main objective is to generate leads or email opt-ins, lead ads—which allow people to sign up for your list and download your content/lead magnet straight from Facebook—should be your go-to.
  • Page Like ads. Want to get more likes for your Facebook page? Page Like Ads, which include a CTA for followers to like your page, are the way to do it.

Before you move forward with running an ad on Facebook, make sure you take the time to understand the different Facebook ads—and what the best way to advertise on Facebook is for you and your goals.

What are the Facebook advertising costs?

Ok, so clearly advertising with Facebook is a marketing strategy you want to pursue for your business. But now comes the big questions—what do Facebook ads cost?

There is, of course, an advertising on Facebook cost. But when it comes to exactly how much it costs advertising with Facebook, the answer is—it’s up to you.
When you’re in Facebook ads manager, you can set your budget for your Facebook ad campaigns. There are two types of budgets: a daily budget (which, according to Facebook, is the “average amount you’re willing to spend on an ad set or campaign per day”) and a lifetime budget (“the amount you’re willing to spend over the entire run-time of your ad set or campaign”). So, if you set a daily budget of $100, Facebook will stop showing your ads for the day once you hit that $100—then will reset the next day and start showing your ads again. If you set a lifetime budget of $1000, Facebook will stop showing your ads completely once you hit that $1000.

The beauty of this budget feature? You can advertise on Facebook with virtually any budget. Advertising with Facebook does have a minimum budget, but it’s extremely low; if your ad on Facebook gets charged by impressions, the minimum is one dollar per day. If your Face book ads get charged for clicks, likes, post engagement, or video views, the minimum is five dollars per day. And if your Facebook ad is based around what Facebook considers a “low frequency event or offer” (like an app install), the minimum daily budget is $40.

So, you set your budgets for your Facebook ads—so you’ll never spend more than you intend. And the best part? The more you optimize your ads, the further your money will go—and the more conversions you’ll be able to squeeze out of your budget.

Top Facebook Advertising Tips

Alright, so now that we’ve covered the basics of how to create and budget for a Facebook business ad, let’s talk about some specific tips for your ads Facebook.

What separates the best Facebook ads from the not-so-great ads on Facebook? The ones that perform like crazy to the ones that get lost in the News Feed? Here are some Facebook marketing tips to get the most out of your ads on Facebook:

  • Make things visual. If you want your Facebook business ad to break through the clutter of your audience’s News Feed, you need something that will grab their attention. And text alone? That just won’t do it. Making your business Facebook ads visual—with images, graphics, or video—will help your ad stand out (and increase engagement and conversions in the process).
  • Use the right copywriting in your Facebook ad. Not all Facebook ad copy is created equal. If you want your Face book marketing to drive results, you need to leverage sales copywriting strategies that make people want to click, engage, and buy. Read up on copywriting best practices (like playing to your audience’s pain points and using copy that evokes specific emotions) and incorporate them into your ad copy.
  • Get to know your audience. If you want your advertising Face book to be effective, you need to know who you’re creating ads for. Get to know your business Facebook audience. Who are they? What are they struggling with? How does your company/product/service help eliminate those struggles? The better you know your audience, the better you ads will be—and the better they’ll perform as a result.
  • Do a test run before you roll out a large campaign. One of the best features of Facebook is the ability to do a “test run” before rolling out a larger Facebook campaign. Before you put all of your budget behind an ad set, test the waters and run it with a smaller budget. This will give you insight into how the ads are performing and will allow you to make any necessary changes or optimizations to improve conversions before you roll out a larger (and more expensive) campaign.
  • Look at what the competition is doing…Do some competitor research to see what your competition is doing in the Face book advertising space. Are they all focused on one specific type of ad? Is there a certain strategy you see over and over again? If all your competitors are doing something, chances are it’s because that “something” is working—and you’ll want to implement it in your strategy to make it work for you, too.
  • …But also dare to be different! Doing competitor research is important, but you also want to establish yourself as a different and unique voice in the Facebook ad space. Don’t be afraid to take risks, do something different, or try something new (as long as it feels true to your brand). Remember, the Facebook ads landscape is a cluttered space—so the more you can stand out, the better!

Social media and business go hand in hand. Marketing on social media—or combining the one-two punch of social media and advertising—is one of the most effective ways to generate buzz around your brand, connect with your ideal audience, and drive recognition, engagement, and sales for your company.

Social media is an incredible tool for businesses—but using social media for business can be a tricky thing. In order to get real results, there’s a lot you need to understand; how to advertise on social media, which social media websites are going to be the most profitable for your particular business, how to drive social media engagement, the secrets of social media branding—it’s quite the laundry list!

But once you understand the basic components of social media marketing and social advertising—and, more importantly, how to use them—social media can quickly become one of the most important marketing tools in your arsenal.

So how, exactly, does social media marketing and social media advertising work? How can you use social media in business to hit your goals? And what do you need to know in order to find real success for your brand across social media platforms?

What is social media marketing?

Before we jump into how to use social media marketing to take your business to the next level, let’s quickly talk about what, exactly, social media marketing is.

According to Search Engine Land, social media marketing “refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media sites.” So, in a nutshell, it’s anything you do on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat to grab your audience’s attention and drive results for your business.

Social media marketing can include paid ad strategies (like social media advertising); more organic strategies driven by social media content (like a Facebook Live video campaign); and everything in between—as long as you’re using social media in business and leveraging a social media website to drive results for your company, it falls under the social media marketing umbrella.

Different ways to connect through social media

So, now that we know what social media marketing is, let’s dig a little deeper into how brands are using social media in business—or, in other words, the different ways to connect with your audience through social media marketing.
Marketing for social media offers a number of different opportunities to connect with your audience and drive results for your business, including:

  • Social media advertising. All the major social media platforms (like Facebook and Instagram) offer businesses the opportunities to create paid social media campaigns to connect with their customers. Advertising in social media is one of the most effective social media strategies out there, thanks to advanced targeting options that allow you to get super specific with a) your ad messaging, and b) who those ads get shown to. This targeted approach to advertising on social media can send conversions through the roof.
  • Building out social media pages. If you want to be successful with social media marketing, you need to have a presence on the right social media platforms—which means building out your social media pages.
  • Social media content. Building out your social media pages is great—but if there’s no content on those pages, you’re not going to get very far. Social media content is a huge component of successful social media marketing—and if you want to connect with your audience on social media, you need to pump out plenty of content (whether that’s in the form of social media posts, videos, or cross-posting in industry groups). If you find you’re struggling to get your social media content in front of your audience, you can partner your content strategy with social advertising and “boost” your posts—which will make it a lot easier to get your content in front of the right people at the right time.
  • Social media design. Part of social media advertising and social media content is creating impactful imagery to go with your posts—also known as social media design. Including graphics in your social posts is shown to dramatically increase conversions—so if you want your social media ads and content to succeed, you should plan on embracing social media design and creating images that will help your social media brand stand out.

If you want the best results advertising in social media, you should plan to experiment with all of these different methods until you find the right groove for your brand.

Building a social media strategy

Alright, so now that we covered some of the basics of social media marketing, let’s get into the good stuff—how to build a social media strategy.

Having a social media strategy in place is an absolute must. Without it, your social media management will be all over the place—and your social media presence, social media branding, and all-around social media engagement will suffer as a result.

So, what are the key steps to building a social media strategy that drives results?

  • Choose the right social media site. The brands who are the most successful on social media know that you can’t be everywhere at once. If you want to really make an impact in the social space, you need to choose the social media networks that are going to drive the best results for your brand—and then funnel your time, energy, resources, and planning into those networks. As you’re building your social media strategy, choose one or two social media sites to focus on before you start trying to build a presence on other platforms.
  • Define your brand. Before you start advertising on social media or developing social media content, you need to get clear on your social media branding. Your audience needs to have a consistent experience no matter where they interact with your brand—and that includes social media. Before you move forward with your social media strategy, get clear on your branding. Who are you as a company? How do you want to come across to your audience? What’s your brand voice—and how are you going use that voice on your social media networks? The clearer you are on your social media branding, the more consistent the experience for your audience—and the better your results will be.
  • Create an editorial calendar. When it comes to social media content, you can’t just post whatever you want on a whim and expect to see results. Creating an editorial content that clearly outlines what you’re going to post, when and where you’re going to post it, and how it ties into your overall social media strategy is not only a way to better your results—it also makes your life much, much easier. When you have an editorial calendar in place, you can schedule your content in advance (instead of rushing to create, write, and post content on a daily basis).
  • Set your social media advertising parameters. If your social media strategy includes advertising on social media, you’ll also want to set your parameters before you launch your social media campaign. Who are you targeting? What ad platforms are you going to use? What kinds of ads are you going to pursue? What are your budgets? How are you going to test and optimize your ads? Getting all of this in line ahead of time will make the entire process of advertising in social media run a lot more smoothly—and your ads will perform much better as a result.
  • Have your metrics and analytics in place. Another huge component of your social media strategy? Having a way to measure your social media engagement. Before you start rolling out content or ads, you need a way to measure your social media marketing success. What are your KPIs? Are you looking to get a certain number of “likes” on your Facebook page? Are you using your social advertising campaign to hit a milestone number of opt-ins to your email list? What analytics tools do you have in place to make sure you’re measuring the success of every ad, post, and campaign (and can adjust if an ad, post, or campaign isn’t performing as well as you’d hoped)? If you want your social media strategy to drive real results for your business, laying out your success metrics—and how you’re going to measure them—ahead of time is a must.

What’s the cost of social media advertising?

Ok, so now to the question that’s always on every marketers mind—how much is this all going to cost?

We wish we could give you a straight answer—but the truth is, the cost of social media in advertising depends on a number of factors, including which social media website you use, what kind of ads you’re leveraging, how targeted your ads are, and who you’re targeting. So, for example, a travel company looking to target millennial entrepreneurs with Instagram ads is going to need a totally different budget than a law firm prospecting new clients through Facebook ads or a marketing tool looking to build brand awareness through Snapchat video advertising.

So the bad news is, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for how much the use of social media in advertising is going to cost your company. But the good news is there are a few surefire ways to keep costs down with advertising and social media—no matter what kind of business you’re in, who you’re targeting, and what social media platform you’re focusing on:

  • Do a “test run” with your ads before rolling out a larger campaign. You wouldn’t buy a car without going for a test drive, right? Well, it’s the same thing with your ad campaigns. Don’t roll out a huge campaign (and a huge budget) right out of the gate—instead, start small. Set a low daily budget and test out your ads. This will allow you to identify what’s working—and, more importantly, what’s not working—before you start spending the big bucks.
  • Split test your ads. Split testing (also known in marketing circles as A/B testing) is a great way to squeeze the most out of every ad. Create your ad, and then create another version with one minor difference (for example, a different graphic or different ad copy). Then, run both ads at the same time, on the same platform, and to the same audience to see which performs better. Take the better performing ad and repeat the process with another minor difference. Keep split testing your ads until you have one that’s performing like crazy—and then put the bulk of your budget behind that high-performing ad.
  • Double (and triple) check your budgets. All the major social media networks allow you to set both daily and lifetime budgets for your ad campaigns—and before you move forward with your campaigns, you need to double (and triple!) check those budgets. It seems like a no-brainer, but mistakes happen—and a typo or extra zero can end up costing you a ton of cash over the lifespan of your campaigns. Just to be safe, make sure to confirm your budgets (and then confirm them again!) before your ads go live.

Best social media for advertising tips

So, now that you know the basics of social media marketing, how to create a social media strategy, and the cost of social media advertising, let’s cover some of the best tips on social media use for business:

  • Keep your finger on the pulse of social media trends. Social media is constantly evolving, and if you want your social media strategy to drive results for your business, you need to evolve right along with it. Make sure you’re staying on top of today’s social media trends—and adjusting your strategy accordingly.
  • Make social media marketing a piece of the larger pie. If you want the best results from your social media marketing, it needs to fit into your overall marketing strategy. Social media integration is key; everything you do on social media needs to tie into your larger marketing goals. Are you running ads for a new product on Facebook? Use the same images on your website or product pages to create a consistent brand experience. Are you creating videos to connect with your audience on Instagram? Post them on your YouTube channel to get more views.
  • Research, research, research. There is so much more to social media marketing and social media for advertising than we could ever cover in a single report—which is why it’s so important to do your research. Read industry blogs, download this free report on the key steps to make your Facebook ads profitable, go to a social media workshop, look at what your competitors are doing. The more research you do on social media marketing, the more information you’ll have to inform your strategy—and the more successful your strategy will be as a result.
  • Consider hiring social media help. If social media marketing feels like it’s way outside of your wheelhouse, you might want to consider hiring social media help in the form of a social media consultant, social media agent, or social media agency. Social media outsourcing is a great way to get social media off your plate—without sacrificing your social media marketing results.
